Venue

Brno ( /ˈbɜːrnoʊ/ in English) is the second largest city of the Czech Republic and it is the the county city of the beautiful South Moravia region. With around 400 000 inhabitants, Brno is still a rather small city with a friendly, cosmopolitan atmosphere.

The city offers dozens of historical sights to see. The cityscape is dominated by the Špilberk castle (literally across the street from conference venue) and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Another architectural monument is the functionalist Villa Tugendhat, which has been included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. You can visit also the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and the neighboring Augistinian Abbey, where the founder of genetics – Gregor J. Mendel – was living and working on his research.

Transportation

Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic, located in the South-Moravian region. There are several options how to reach Brno – by air, train or car.

Passport and Visa

A valid passport is required for entry into Czech Republic. A visa may be required for some countries – please check with your embassy. For more information about visa, please visit the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Letters of invitation required to meet the administrative and legal regulations for participants will be available upon request – please contact Bara Kozlikova.

By Air to Vienna or Prague

The recommended way to reach Brno is a flight to Vienna Schwechat airport, and then take the bus to Brno.

There is a direct bus line from Vienna airport to the center of Brno. The bus stop is just in front of Vienna Airport (a few meters from terminal 3 exit). The bus ride to the center of Brno takes approximately two and half hours. Buses depart approximately every two hours. A single way ticket costs 17€. You can check timetables and buy tickets online here. Please note that the tickets should be bought in advance.

For train connections between Vienna airport and Brno, see rail connections. The train journey takes about two hours (including a transfer at Vienna’s main train station: “Wien Hauptbahnhof”) and costs around 27€.

Another option is a flight to Prague, to Václav Havel airport, and then use the bus or train to get to Brno. There is a bus line connecting Prague airport and Brno, with a bus transfer at Prague’s main bus station. The entire bus journey takes around three and half hours. A single way bus ticket costs 11€. You can check timetables and buy tickets online here. Please note that the tickets should be bought in advance.

You can find other means of transit between Prague airport and Prague city center here.

By Rail

You can reach Brno by train with direct connections from several European capitals, including Berlin, Bratislava, Hamburg, Prague and Vienna. More destinations can be reached with transfer at Prague or Břeclav. For connections and ticket prices, see the website of Czech Railways.

By Air to Brno

There is also a small airport on the outskirts of Brno city, operating flights from London and Munich. For details, see the website of Brno airport.

Transportation from Brno airport to the city center is covered by bus line E67 departing every 30 minutes. The journey to the city center takes about 30 minutes.

By Car

Car traffic is not limited in the city center, so you can reach the conference venue comfortably by car. Parking is available directly at the venue hotel or at nearby parking lots.

It is necessary to have a highway sticker for highways, which is for sale at the border crossings, petrol stations and post offices.

Please note that in the time of VCBM2019, the D1 highway between Prague and Brno will be under reconstruction, so most probably there will be heavy traffic and possible delays due to traffic jams.

Brno Public transport

The city itself is served by a dense network of public transportation services, including buses, trolleys and trams, that covers the entire city. You can find timetables and journeys online here.

The nearest stops to the conference venue are “Česká” (at the heart of city center) and “Šilingrovo náměstí”, each covered by multiple tram lines.

Paper tickets for public transport can be bought at yellow ticket machines at most stops or directly from the driver (please note that drivers accept only Czech cash).

There are several options for public transport tickets:

  • transfer ticket valid for 15 minutes – 0.75€ (20 CZK)
  • transfer ticket valid 60 minutes – 0.90€ (25 CZK)
  • unlimited ticket valid for five days – 10.00€ (250 CZK)
